Samuel (Sam) Fidler grew up in Spanish Fork, Utah, where he competed in cross country, wrestling, and soccer; he was also a percussionist for the Spanish Fork High School marching, concert, jazz bands. He joined the Utah Army National Guard when he was 17 and graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course 3 years later. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Adelaide, Australia. From 1991 through 1997 he served on active duty with the 3rd Special Forces Group and participated in Operation Uphold Democracy. He also was assigned as an instructor at the Special Forces Qualification Course teaching Leadership, Land Navigation, and Small Unit Tactics. After returning to Utah he became one of the first members of the National Guard to be activated for Operation Enduring Freedom and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service in Afghanistan. He later volunteered for a second tour in Afghanistan in 2004 and the Philippines in 2006-2007. Sam Fidler has announced his candidacy for the 5th Utah Senate District.
